I first met Zmajček magazine when my children started kindergarten. I probably loved it before they did—snatching it up eagerly before little hands could even reach it. 😀
I loved the mix and style of the illustrations—always colourful, lively, even when touching on more serious themes. Once I began illustrating myself I often thought how lovely it would be to see my work in such a magazine.
One day I plucked up courage and sent a portfolio email to Ms Urška—half in jest, half in earnest—never expecting a reply, more to practise being brave. And she answered, saying they liked the illustrations though they weren’t expanding their illustrator pool.
I was thrilled. Some time later another message arrived: they’d like an illustration for the poem ‘Pes Nik’ by Zvezdana Majhen. Good job nobody saw my happy dance then. I seized the chance; since then Ms Urška and I are in touch more often and I draw for Zmajček now and again. Grateful.
