How a random thought completely changed the plan for Calendar 2027
Here we go again this year! Honestly, I simply can’t imagine a new year without my annual calendar any more. And for the 2027 calendar I’ve cooked up something truly special. A proper treat!
Although… I have to confess that the original plan looked completely different.

When peaceful summer plans fall through
At first, summer ticked along peacefully in my creative corner. New illustrations for the 2027 calendar were taking shape, and quite a few of them were already waiting proudly on paper. They’re gorgeous. Colourful, golden, silver, imaginative, fairytale-like, a little abstract and, naturally, organic. Pure fun, I tell you.
But then I wouldn’t be me if my brain weren’t switching channels at a hundred miles an hour. Between paints, lunch, invoices, dirty laundry, dance rehearsals, plans for wandering up the next hill, repainting that wall that’s well and truly smeared with little fingerprints and, of course, rearranging the pictures in the hallway – and ideas for the calendar.

“Master of recycle” takes the stage
And then, somewhere in between, I’m painting a really sweet little song for Zmajček magazine. It turned out brilliantly! I was so pleased with how I’d put those colours together and how nicely they fell into step with the sheet music.
And then a thought strikes me: “Blimey, what a shame these illustrations are so fleeting. They bring a monthly flash of joy and then nod off in my archive drawer. And there’s so much love in them, I can hardly put it into words.”
But you know me – I am master of recycle 😀
And then it clicks: ooh, how lovely would it be to have a calendar one year made entirely of the illustrations I created for Zmajček! That would be a wonderfully cheerful, playful calendar.
I carry on mulling over whether I could stir ricotta and a little lemon zest into the turkey instead of cream, because fewer calories and all that… then I look at my finished 2027 pictures once more and say to myself: “Oh, what if I did it THIS year already?”

A green light: the 2027 calendar as a special edition
Before I’d even decided that today I’d rather cook chicken-thigh paprikash after all, because right now it goes better with gnocchi than turkey does, I wrote to Urša at Zmajček to ask what she thought of a “special edition” calendar featuring a selection of illustrations from the magazine. And Urša loved the idea! I loved it even more.
I know many of you don’t buy Zmajček (perhaps because you don’t work in a nursery or school, or don’t have little ones) and so never come across these illustrations at all. And let me tell you, it would be a real shame for them to pass you by – you don’t know what you’re missing! 😛
So I made up my mind: the brand-new pictures will wait patiently for 2028. They won’t run away. This year, though, I’m treating you to all these cheerful characters from Zmajček. I hope you’re at least half as excited as I am! Wiu wiu 😀

Now for one more dilemma, and this is where I turn to you. I’m pondering whether to reprint just the classic wall version, or whether you’d like that sweet little desk-sized treat again too?
If you’d like the desk calendar, let me know in the comments (or wherever suits you best), so I can put two and two together.
So now you know: the calendar has already had its hair done for its new look and is now at the printer. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s available. No worries. Now for a quick walk to let some fresh air into my head :P, and then it’s back to emails, pencils and erasers, roasted courgettes, dance rehearsals, a webinar on short-sightedness in the digital age, Assyrian art – and I’m sure I’ll throw in a few more things besides 😛
