About those who don’t fit the average frame
Have you ever felt as though you were born into the wrong place? As though your edges were too sharp, your colours too strong, or your voice too loud for the surroundings you found yourself in? This three dragons picture book illustration is for you.
This is the story of Lučka. A little girl who feels she simply doesn’t fit in. But as she grows up, Lučka discovers something magnificent: she is not the one who is “broken”. Her qualities are merely so different from the average that those around her don’t know how to read them. With the help of three mighty dragons, each embodying one of her powers, Lučka comes to realise that her “weaknesses” are in fact her greatest gifts. And once she accepts this, she can pass her gift on to others who are still searching for their own way.
A world born from an explosion of colour
Every picture book I take on is a new world for me. It’s getting to know new characters who are born from textual descriptions in my head. Creating a new reality. On the Lučka and the Three Dragons project (by author Jasmina Tanjšek) I really let myself go.
This time I chose strong, expressive colours. Each of the three dragons has its own distinctive colour, drawn from its character. I then balanced these strong tones with natural, gentle shades, to create a harmony between strength and fragility. The book is visually entirely its own, and I must admit I enjoyed it immensely and I’m delighted with how the story of colour finally came together as a whole.
A meeting of two souls
Author Jasmina Tanjšek and I connected in a very special way. Jasmina had been following me on social media for some time, and then she rang me about working together. I felt an instant connection with her. She is an extraordinarily gentle, emotional and sensitive soul, yet at the same time a woman who stands firmly on her own two feet and knows exactly what she wants. Working with her was a sheer joy, and I’m grateful that this project brought us together.
