Želiš stran od teh tečnih, nejevoljnih in utrujenih misli. Greva! Te peljem na oblaku v svet domišljije. Med stolpnice, ki niso sive in kovinaste, kot ploščica v kolenu sosedove Minke. Moje so pisane in razigrane in znajo žvrgoleti. V njih raste velikansko cvetje in vedno lepo diši. Vsaj za trenutek, zbeživa v pravljco.

Žana, miljenica svemira (Žana, Beloved of the Universe) is a true account by Croatian author Vedrana Turniški about her daughter Žana, born with only half a heart and clinging to life from day one. A poignant narrative threaded with courage, tears and stubborn challenges.

Žana is now six. From the first day she made it clear that life with her would be anything but ordinary or easy. Yet she inspires many, gently shifting physical and mental boundaries in everyone who encounters her story.

Editor Matea Čvagić Prašnjak wrote about the book:

“The story in the title, ‘Žana, miljenica svemira‘, may have already found form and line in literature, yet it is far more than a book. It speaks of a woman and the family she shapes, of life sprouting and being born, of a girl who from her very first moment had to be brave – and was. This Žana, beloved of the universe, born with half a heart yet with room for the whole world, can journey alongside us all.”

For this sensitive, sorrowful yet inspiring narrative I illustrated the cover. I wanted it to emphasise fragility, sensitivity and the tenderness with which we enter the world. Despite the weight of the story I used bright colours to lift childhood joy and that inner urgency that makes us cling to life.
